i thought the lower mounts in my 92 9000T were bad based on some of the same symptoms you mentioned- i was getting a lot, and i do mean a lot, of in-gear shifter movement, especially in 2nd and 3rd. i had a very knowledgeable local indy mechanic here (Walter Wong, who by the way is fantastic and i can't recommend him enough) look at it because without a hoist or a lift, i didn't feel messing with it.

he told me the mount itself was fine, but it was an aftermarket mount which allowed for too much excess motion. i did the motor mount modification, detailed in Quasi's great site, although i didn't feel like removing a good motor mount, i simply snap-tied two small pieces of hose into place.

the shifter still moves a little, but no where near as much as it did and the power seems to get to the ground much better. what i thought was going to cost me $200+, ended up costing me $6 and a small amount of labor. needless to say i was quite happy...
