I opened the garage door and when I unlocked the car, the lights flashed to show the alarm had gone off. Noticed a rubbing noise as I reversed out of the garage, but couldn't be sure. Drove it down the road, terrible rubbing noise, drove it back. The front left spring had broken (presumably while it was in the garage, tripping the alarm) and one of the broken ends was sticking into the tyre. The tyre, only a few hundred miles old, was ruined.

These days, I would fix it myself, but I fitted the spare wheel, which is narrower so didn't foul on the spring, and drove it to the local brake/shock/tyre/exhaust shop. They got the spring from a Saab dealer. I had the tyre replaced elsewhere (where I had bought all four shortly before).

I had no warning. In the section regarding removal of the front struts, the Haynes manual says "Examine the coil spring for signs of general wear, deterioration or damage. In particular, look for cracking and serious corrosion; renew the spring if either are found." This is assuming you have the spring removed so you can see all of it, but it seems this is the type of thing to look for.
