Sorry to hear your experience.

I have a Saab 900SE Turbo and the other Swedish turbo charged car. I am running higher than stock boost levels and enjoy spirited driving. In my situation, I am going to replace the bearing and seals in the turbos around 100K miles (I'm curently at 80K and 82K on the cars). Several years ago I read a Popular Mechanics article and they had several pages that showed (detailed) how to rebuilt a turbo yourself for under $100. The bearing and seals are off-the-shelf items and you only needed basic hand tools available at your local hardware store.

Turbos tend to scare people, but they are much simplier than people think. While I have not yet touched the turbos in my cars, I have fooled with turbos in non-car application and found the theory and mechinical make-up rather simple.

Anyone that is mechanically skilled may want to research with Popular Mechanics to find the article I metioned above. I did say several years ago, but this may be as far back as 1987. While turbos have changed the basic design and built has remained nearly the same.
