I still have my 87 9kT that behaves alike... here's how it went:

- One day (sunshine but not too warm) I took off from a traffic light,
car shifted 1st, 2nd, 3rd, then came a turn, downshift to 2nd, after
that a long level straight: upshift to 3rd again.

- Before shifting up to 4th, I noticed a brief hesitation, like the car
would think it over, but then came the 4th... no sign of problems for
the next few hundred meters (no noise, no vibration, no smell).

- Before a 90 deg right turn I braked, car shifted 3rd, 2nd, 1st... and
when I had finished that turn and wanted to accelerate again, my
forward gears were gone. Just like that. No noise, nothing.

- I found a place to park (lucky me, the reverse worked) and called my
mechanic for help. When he arrived about 1 hour later and started the
car for a test, everything was back to normal. He suggested adding some
ATF but I asked him to take the car to the shop and give her a complete
drain and refill, just to be sure. After that, I had no problems
whatsoever for about 4 or 5 weeks...

- Another day (after 4 or 5 weeks, cloudy, about 20 deg C), myself amidst
rush hour city traffic: Have to stop at a red light, lever in position
"D", foot on the brake. When the light turns green... I turn pale: No
forward gears (well, I'm exaggerating... at 4 - 5k rpm I managed to
literally crawl off the intersection). Found a space to park (again,
the reverse worked), shut her down and went for a coffee. After half
an hour I tried again: The forward gears were back.

The situation now:

- Car drives great when cold, tranny acts like new.

- After about 20mins. city driving, the forward gears disappear all of a
sudden. NOTE: They do not do this while driving but only at stops!

- If you manage to get into 4th and stay there before the 20mins. are
over, you may as well go 2000 miles like that... the 4th never lets
you down unless you shift to 3rd.

- After driving like this for, say, half an hour, and coming to a stop
(having left the highway, for instance), the engine nearly dies bcs.
it obviously can't let go the 4th gear... only 2 or 3 meters before
coming to a complete halt, the engine revs up again. And then (you
guessed it) gone are your 3 other forward gears.

- Let her rest for about 30 to 60mins., depending on outside temperature,
and drive on like nothing had happened.

I hope the TSN gurus have any idea on what this could be and maybe how to fix it without trashing the old tranny... I am currently trying to sell my beloved turbo ashamingly cheap bcs. nobody wants to repair the tranny and I cannot afford having a remaned one built in... but I'd definitely shed more than one tear over the loss of that car...
