I have always removed the entire axle when doing anything related to the cv joints.

The only thing I can think of is that the inner driver has come out of the joint and is not giving enough clearance to pull the axle back out of the front joint. Try pushing the hub up into position to make sure that the inner driver is seated all the way back in, and then pull the hub forward while holding the axle and also while holding the snap ring open. That snap ring is difficult. I use lock ring pliers, which are much larger than snap ring pliers, for this.

If that doesn't work, then I think you are going to have to take out the axle. You will have to reattach the hub, put the wheel back on and lower the car in order to remove the wheel nut. The wheel nut is 32mm.

Loosen the nut. Jack the car back up. Take off the wheel. Loosen the wheel nut all the way to the end of the threads so that the front of the nut is flush or slightly out from the end of the axle stub. Pull the hub from the right so that it is at the maximum right/left angle possible (having both front sides jacked up may be required to do this). Hit the axle stub with a hammer to break the stub free of the splines in the hub. Then remove the strut bolts and the large clip on the boot on the inner driver. Pull the hub forward and pull the inner driver out. Bring the axle down and to the right, and pull the axle out of the hub. Try not to drop the axle when it's out.
