Wheel alignment DIY?

A comment from my daughter woke me up some days ago: "Dad, the Volvo I drove today felt more steady and secure on the road than our Saab". I gave it a thougt. She could be right. Was there a possible misalignment of the front wheels? Maybe not so strange considering that the -88 9000 had had new shocks, rubber boots (Quasi's method, really helpful site), new front lower control arm rear bushes (SuperFlex polyurethane) and lower balljoints mounted during the past months (great site too, BillJ). After searching this board I used the method to check the wheel alignment with a laser light pen, and found (by 3 separate occasions= independent measurments, same result every time) that the left front wheel had a slight toe-ut with the steereing wheel in senter straight forward. I have now adjusted it back to toe-in by turning the tie-rod "outwards" 3/4 turn. The steering feels better, the car is a bit more steady on the road. My question is: The laser light procedure involves using the rim of the back tyre as a reference point. What is the quality of this reference, is there a big risk that my measurement is biased by any reason? Or is this an acceptable way to do a wheel alignment check?
