Townsend goes with Mercedes coolant and says that, after years of use in engines, the cooling system components show no corrosion, something he couldn't say about other brands.

I was paying $12 a gallon for Mercedes coolant at the dealer, which I always thought was high, but there was no other source. Zerex now markets the same coolant, G-05, which can be bought for about 6.50 USD at Autozone, IIRC. I use 1:1 with distilled water (to eliminate sodium from the mix). You'll need to completely flush out the old stuff. I installed one of those Prestone flush kit fittings into the hose that goes from the cyl head to the heater core. Then I drain and fill with distilled, run it until warm (I throw in a splash of coolant to raise the boiling point) and drain after cool, and if nobody is looking I repeat that step, then fill with my mix.
