The autobox on the 9000 is not solid, at least not by the standard longevity of the rest of the car.

Autoboxes tend to last 80-120K miles. Some less, some longer. Assuming 100K is a safe bet. Higher power output reduces life. That's one major reason why the autobox Aero has less power - so that the tranny life is still decent.

The approach should be that if you want an automatic tranny in your car, then buy a car with an autobox. If the autobox is original and the car has 80K or so on it, build the price of a new (rebuilt) box into the buy price - typically $2500-$3K. If the box lasts forever, you're ahead of the game; if it dies, you've covered yourself.

If you don't care what tranny you get, get a manual. They are more reliable than the automatic, but manuals (and clutches) break too. The manual has more power, gets better mileage, and is quicker (both more power and more efficient).

It's impressive that we complain about replacing the tranny at 100K. Yeah, it would be nice if it were longer, but to think that the weakest link in the car is usually good for 100K miles. There are a lot of cars where it's not worth refilling the windshield wiper fluid at 100K miles. All cars need maintenance and repair, even the ones made by Matchbox.
