PCV related question-inoperative non-return valve

Given the age of my 9000 (1994 Aero, 77,000 miles) I had decided to replace some of the parts related to the PCV valve system. One of the parts that I replaced was the non-return valve (also marked on the packaging as a "Ruckschlagventil")(this is essentially a cylindrical valve (about the diameter of a nickle) with a vacuum hose fitting on each end). This valve is attaced to a vacuum hose that runs from the smaller fitting on the PCV valve to a vacuum port on the intake manifold. Anyway, the new valve would only pass vacuum in one direction, whereas the old valve would pass vacuum in both directions (indicating that it was shot).

My question is as follows - what negative impact on the engine did the fact that the old valve would pass vacuum in both directions have? I have not noticed any difference in the performance of the car after installing the new PCV system parts.
