That's going to be tough.

On the one hand...
Many of the folks I autocross with are regularly embarrassed by the guy who drives a Lincoln towncar (unmodified). He places consistenly high in f-stock against the camaros, etc. So it is possible that all you need is seat time. All the folks I know are happy to give rides or take rides and give advice, which can help a lot.

On the other hand....
I have autocrossed my 9000cse full pressure turbo as well as an mr2 turbo. The mr2 will go exactly where you want it, with little effort, even if you get it sideways. It's very fast, very precise, and very forgiving. I love my 9000 for a lot of reasons, but by comparison it's a pig. It understeers all over the place, has way too much body roll for a relatively unskilled driver like me to handle quick transitions, and it's very tough to get the power down.

Bottom line, for all but the most mismatched drivers the mr2 is super hard to beat. I usually autocross a CRX, and I can get a lot out of it-- I hopped right in the mr2 and got the same times because it was so easy to drive. I couldn't get close to either in the 9000. A great driver could, but not me.

That said, r-compound tires are going to be the easiest improvement. Aero suspension and swaybars will help too. Aside from that anything that would really help will also take you out of stock class and bump you into a class where the competition will be much stiffer. I don't know if that matters to you, but for the price of a set of wheels, a set of nearly disposable tires, and suspension, you could take some great driving classes.

Me? I've found that the most economical method by far is to autocross someone else's car. ;) And if that someone else has a boyfriend who is an autocross instructor, so much the better.

We've had a few autocrosses in the snow... That might even things up. Alternatively, take a good look at the mr2 and enjoy the thought that you don't have to fix it. That's why my friend sold his.
