the fan is controlled by the temp sensor in the driver's side of the head, as well as one other item (ECU or thermoswitch, I can't remember). This sensor also controls the coolant temp gauge in the dash.

When I was having this issue, the fan would kick on immediately after start-up, and would not turn off until the car was turned off. When I replaced the temp sensor (in the driver's side of the head), the problem went away.

This is also what people on this board had told me when I was having the problem.

I also remember reading that depending upon the year of the car, the fan is controlled differently. But all late-models follow what I explained above.

As for the style of sensor to get from the dealer, '97 and '98 use the same type, but '96 used both types, which is why you need to ensure you get the correct one. Just looking at it will show if it has a washer or not (that's the difference--they're NOT interchangeable).
