Think of the transmission as a hydraulic computer. Open it up, and in the valve body you'll find what looks like a tiny rat's maze, with little holes, ball bearings, pistons, and springs. Depending on pressure differences in the fluid, balls move and open or close passages, pistons slide against springs, and other magic happens. If the fluid is old and dirty, contains water, or a dozen other things, then holes clog, pistons stick, and ball bearings don't roll. The 'computer' messes up, it starts to shift, but doesn't finish the shift until the engine speed goes way up, driving up a pressure and finally moving that sticky piston.

It's different with newer trannies which have electronic controls. But the ZF in the 9000 is an old-fashioned hydraulic controlled unit.

A bad accumulator spring is indeed a possibility. But before pulling the valve body off, do the right (and easiest) thing and flush the fluid. I like changing tranny fluid every 15K miles. If I don't know the last time the fluid was changed (or I know the car HASN'T had a good history of changes,) I'd do the flush (change 2 or three times in quick succession). Changing the fluid is something that you should be doing quite regularly; so do it and see if that helps.

The ZF in the 9000 is fragile, at least compared to the rest of the car. However, ALL automatics should have regular fluid changes.
