Hi, Mate, here on the other side of the pond we are big on manual gearbox`s. If the noise goes away when you dip the clutch it is a pritty good indiction that the layshaft bearing is worn, this may sound expensive but it is just part of the clutch kit. When the clutch is changed the layshaft bearing should also be changed (a point sometimes overlooked by some fitters). If the clutch has been in the car for some time it may be normal wear. To check the clutch, (hopeing i`m not teaching gran to suck eggs) select the 5th gear take the revs up, HOLDING THE HANDBRAKE FULLY ON slowly release the clutch pedal, if the engine does not stall imeadiatly but instead you are able to release the clutch pedal fully and it is a good indication that the clutch needs or will soon require changing.
