My first thought would be a belt issue. Something could have come loose and the belt is rubbing. You usually aren't going to get far if it's a major rub, but it could be minor (for now). Use a flashlight to look at the path of the serpentine belt. The belt should run smoothly - it should almost be hard to tell that it's moving. Make sure it is running in the very center of the tensioner pulley - not to one side or another. If it's off, it could be that the bolt on the top of the tensioner has given way, or that the main pulley (harmonic balancer) is coming apart. The tensioner pulley may jiggle a little front-to-back (maybe 1/8 inch), but not a lot.
Other than that, something may have just gotten loose and is rubbing against the belt. If it is from the transission side, it could be as simple as something falling into the bell housing. Of course, it could be much more expensive, but let's think cheap for now.
