Can you comment as to whether you blew your new fuse at the point that the car heated up, or before that? If it blew at the moment that the fan should have turned on, that indicates to me that the thermoswitch is working fine, and that the problem is occurring "downstream" of the fuse. Either short in the wiring or bad motor that pulls too much current. If your low speed operation is also compromised, and the engine got really hot before the fuse blew, then perhaps the fan is going directly from dead stop to high speed, which I hear will blow the fuse, also. However, this fuse melting behavior sounds pretty extreme, so I'm thinking at this point that a short is most likely.

I use the Ohm function on my multimeter mostly to check "continuity" of circuits. That is, does current flow unimpeded along a wire from point A to point B? It's useful also for testing for a short. If a wire is supposed to send current first through some device, like a fan motor, before current reaches ground, you can check whether that wire has a short to ground, prior to reaching the device, by unplugging the wire from the device and checking for continuity between either end of the wire and ground. It's important to do this when there is no voltage being applied to the wire, as that voltage may fry your meter in the Ohms setting. Sometimes what I do first is to set the multimeter to DC volts (mine has a setting where full meter deflection is 20V, so it's perfect for detecting 12V), test the wire for voltage by putting the red lead on the wire and black to ground. If I get no meter deflection, then I switch to Ohms and check for continuity between wire and ground. If I do get meter deflection, I'm not quite ready yet to conclude that there is a short. I need to make sure that neither end of the wire is connected to anything that leads to ground. Leads connected to motors show continuity with ground, same with light bulbs. Once I'm sure that the wire is truly isolated, I test it about 3 more times just to convince myself of the bad news, and then I proceed with trying to find the bare area on the wire.

Best of luck.
