The first time I took the 95cse in the NOx reading was 1,037 (versus 937) allowed. Nothing else was wrong. Then I thought this is a perfect candidate for GTP, Garanteed To Pass. Poured a bottle in the tank with a full tankful of Sunoco Ultra. Ran it empty. Refilled with Sunoco Ultra and tried again. The reading became 1,090.

I was at my wits end and the inspection station gave me a deadline of 4/30/07. It has a 1/07 sticker. I was so busy in the beginning of the year the first inspection was done in March.

This Sunday I removed the cat converter. I found the original stock cat (148k miles) has a big chunk of honey comb scoured in the back. Is it not apparent enough? So I used a Bosal cat I bought a year ago to replace it. My foresight of using stainless steel bolts for the exhaust made removing and installing the cat so easy I did the removal and install in 40 minutes.

The verdict came this morning:

NOx: 30 versus 937 permitted
HC: 3 versus 124 permitted
CO%: 0.00 versus 0.69 permitted
CO2%: 14.8

Next in line is the 94cs. It has a 10/06 sticker also failing emmisions with high HC. It has exhaust smoke the inspection station won't even put it on the dyno. Its engine is now on the stand in my garage. Haven't had time to look into what caused the smoke. I suspect it is the turbocharger. I have switched the drive train with that on the 94cde. A new clutch is also installed. Yesterday I also removed the cat to verify the honey comb is intact. I made the mistake of running it through inspections the next day following the drivetrain swap. A loose vacuum hose resulted in the NOx reading at over 3,000.

I don't know what I'll do with the 94cde. Guess I'll still put it together after all. The kids need to use it coming home from school in the summer.

One thing at a time...
