Did Autozone give you the exact fault number? There are several failure codes for an O2 sensor, one of which is the heater circuit.

Heater circuits deteriorate over time. To determine if this is what is causing the problem, see if you can measure the resistance over the O2 sensor heater circuit: find the connector plug and measure the resistance between the two same-colored (i.e. both white) wires. On my 1996 Audi, the official spec for this measurement is 0 (really? not likely) to 20 Ohms, I was getting a Check Engine Light (CEL) when the measurement crept up to about 30 Ohms; I replaced the sensor with a new (generic Bosch) part and the reading is now about 3.5 Ohms, no more CEL. I assume that the spec for the SAAB is similar - both cars use Bosch 4-wire sensors.

A heater circuit fault will not render the car undrivable; the heater warms up the O2 sensor so it can read more accurately sooner in the warm-up cycle - you might waste some gas if the car defaults to a richer mixture during the warm-up. Eventually, the hot exhaust gases will provide the necessary heat. A CEL will however render the car undrivable in 30 days if you show up for your biannual Illinois EPA emissions inspection with the light on, causing an automatic failure (I believe that you get 30 days to fix the problem and must return for a retest).
