Thanks, all, for the straight talk. It's good to hear these comments from people who don't have a vested interest in whether I have the work done or not.

The problem with my doing my own work is finding space. I live in Chicago and it's not feasible for me to do this work--even learning as I go--on the street.
I did have a good indy shop before but I had a really bad experience the last two times I went. One of the guys (an owner) was just getting pretty nasty to me, just dismissive as hell. Not sure why, I'm not exactly a demander (yeah, what they all say, right?) or pushy. Maybe I asked too many questions, maybe he just didn't like my face, maybe he was having a bad six months but I decided that I was paying WAY too much money to be treated like a jerk.

Aaron-you're right about the work. My sense is that my hose was leaking before. My previous shop was good about telling me if something absolutely needed to be done. I think the same thing is true of the water pump. I don't seem to run out of fluids fast and every now and then I get a whiff of coolant. That's been happening for years, and apparently it's not the heater core. This new shop said that if I don't get the water pump fixed it would drip and ultimately affect the rack-and-pinion. But who knows?

I guess one question about the motor mounts: can anyone tell me how I'll know if they're going bad. What happens when they're REALLY bad?

Anyway, thanks so much to all who responded. I really appreciate it.
