Got my 97 Aero at 62K with slop in the steering. The clamp beyond the U joint on the column assembly where it connects to the rack spline shaft was loose. This allowed sliding back and forth on the rack spline as the u-joint turned causing the slop in the steering. First Saab out of 12 that I've owned that wasn't rock solid tight and it drove me crazy- even bought a used steering column which I haven't used yet.

The cure was to break the original locktight on the clamp bolt, which according to my mechanic was a bitch, and tighten down that clamp so that it didn't slide back and forth on the spline shaft of the rack. 99% of the problem went away. There was some wear on both components as a result of this action for 90K.
