It's always worth checking the wiring. Of course, make sure you've got the radio code, because you'll be pulling it out of the dash.

First, pull out the equalizer. It uses the same tool as the radio for removal. The difference is the equalizer has a fat bunch of wires out the back. Inspect the wires for frays, breaks, or bad connections. If you don't see any problems, it's time to remove the radio mounting.

The radio slips into a rectangular metal box. The box is held into the dash by little flaps of metal bent over. Use a screwdriver or needle-nose pliers and pry those little flaps back. Don't bend them a lot or you'll break them, but they are reasonably sturdy - I've pulled the mounting out a few times and never lost one.

Pull the mounting out, and inspect the wiring harness behind it. There are a bunch of connectors. Pull the connectors apart and re-seat them. You might just have a poor connection that will respond to fiddling with the connector.

You can always send the radio back to Clarion, where they will fix it for a flat $80 rate. I've done it with great success in the past. The trouble in your case is that it isn't clear where the problem lies - is it the radio, the equalizer, the electrical harness, or just a bad ground point? Until that has been troubleshot, it's premature to blame the radio.

If you want, you can bypass the equalizer entirely. There is a cable coming out of the back of the radio mount that goes to the equalizer. All the equalizer does is take the signals from the radio, adjust the frequency response, and then send it back to the radio. At the back of the radio mount there is a little cap on a lanyard. You can disconnect the harness to the equalizer and put the cap on instead. This just routes the signal back to the radio - in effect, an equalizer that makes no adjustments. You could then pull out the equalizer and use that space for storing tapes.

There is no question you can yank the entire radio/equalizer and replace it with a new unit. If you're tired of the sound of the Clarion, and want a nicer-sounding system, this is the way to go. But I find the Clarion sounds good enough for me, and the convience of the built-in system beats going out for an aftermarket unit. 'Tis up to you.

Good luck!
