OK, I am hearing a lot of bad news about the ZF Automaics in the 9000.
Well, I can tell you that I have a 88' SAAB 9000 Turbo with the ZF Auto and I haven't had much trouble with it until I had someone I know rebuild it for me. This Auto lasted 266,000 kms and I never had an ounce of trouble with it in that time. The reason for the Rebuild was that it started to flare when changing gear. The person I got to build the Auto, Pulled it down and said that there was not much wrong with it. The governor seals had worn out.
That was then. I wish I had of taken this automatic to someone who knew about these Transmissions. Since the rebuild the Automatic has been out of the car 5 times.
It has burnt out the 2-3 clutch pack about 4 times and now we have found out why.
The Rear Stator Bush the was replaced had moved down along the housing and Blocked off one of the oil galleries and the Stator Shaft Ring was running along the edge of the Bush. This allowed pressure to the 2-3 clutch pack and caused the clutches to stay engaged. What a mess is made when this happens. Of course when the Clutches are applied while it is in another gear it of course binds and causes a lot of heat. I feel I will never forget the Smell of Burning Auto Fluid.
Anyhow, The auto is fine now and I would expect a long life again from it. The rings and seals that ZF suply in their Rebuild kits are now of a Higher quality than what was originally used in the transmission in the first place. I would suggest to anyone that is thinking of buying a Saab, Don't worry too much if it is an Automatic. I would feel that they are no worse than any other Automatic on the road. But, If your Automatic in your SAAB does need work, Take it to someone who knows about the ZF Automatics.

I just thought I would put My 2 cents worth in..

Seeya,
Damian
