I also have an '87 9000T, and have completely redone the stereo. If you're wanting to add a CD and keep the stock cassette player, your best bet is an RF changer, or, try to pick up a used Saab CD. Problem with a used CD player, is that it probably will need as much money put in to bring it up to specs, as a good new unit.

Anyhow, to replace/add components to the stereo, all you have to do is pop out the existing unit(s) and put your standard DIN 7" x 2" aftermarket unit in. Piece of cake. The ashtray can also be put in any slot or removed completely, there are two clips which hold it in, slide a flat bladed screwdriver between the top of the ashtray and the top of the slot, there's on about 1/3 of the way in from each side. Sometimes, just prying in the middle will bring the clips down enough so it just pops right out.

As for wiring, you can splice into the factory wires (I can give you the pinout from my audio manual for the power/ground/antenna/illumination/etc).

If you want to redo the whole system, take a look at my site for a few ideas. How far you want to go all depends on how much $$$ you want to spend, and what goals you have for the system.
