When you say it doesn't work, do you mean that it doesn't feel like it's still connected, or that it won't stop the car?

First off, you should feel some resistance as you pull up the handle. It should get hard to pull after 4 or 5 clicks. If not, peek down at the base of the brake handle - you should see two cables heading back. Make sure they haven't fallen off.

Then go to the rear brakes. As Aero Guy says, make sure you've got brake pad back there. Then inspect the handbrake cables - make sure they're hooked in to the lever(s) on the rear of the brake caliper. Pull on the brake lever and make sure the levers move.

If the levers move, you just might need to adjust the handbrake cables. There are nuts at the base of the handbrake lever - tighten them to tighten the cable. With the handbrake off, the rear wheels should spin. With the handbrake at 4 clicks, the wheels shouldn't turn by hand. There are two adjustments, one for each wheel. It's possible that one was totally out, and that the other one loosened up or otherwise stopped working, and that's why it felt like it suddenly went away.
