Yes it is internal, and its seal should be replaced.

The complete clutch kit should also be installed. Flywheel removed and the engine rear seal replaced. A good Saab oriented shop whould know these things.

Sometimes the slack does not get right with a new cable or its end at trany was not properly seated and slips in place, then slack goes wrong. Slack adjusted by pulling jacket back at firewall.

Fork is very heavy, does not make sense that is is bent. But wear of it and wear of clutch does alter geometries that makes operation difficult.

While trany is out, replacement of trany input and two output seals is easy at that time. For 1997, not sure if you have synthetic GB oil or not. Good time for that changeover perhap$.

Fork is in bell housing. The transmission case is not opened up... so no gasket kit. Perhaps a seal kit.

Petal resistance. Could be cable slack. Situation does not sound right to me.
