Intermittent groan when heat on - pitch follows RPM - ?

I've scoured the BB for this one, but only one post that really matches mine, and it didn't have an associated solution, unfortunately.

A groaning noise comes from what sounds like deep behind the center console. I've only noticed it when the heat is on, and turning the heat off while it's groaning makes it go away instantly. I can't hear the noise with my head in the engine compartment - probably drowned out by other engine noise - only when inside the car.

The pitch of the noise is scaled with engine RPM. Reving the engine also "revs" the pitch of the noise. And I can sometimes get the noise to stop by revving it enough. Used to go away easily by reving, these days I have to really rev the hell out of it to finally conquer the noise.

I've only seen one other post of someone having an RPM-related noise, so I am afraid no one will know what this is. From what I've read on the BB, it's probably not the AC expansion valve because this noise apparently is not related to RPM. Maybe the compressor, is that driven directly off the crankshaft? but why would the AC compressor be on when I have the heat on?

I don't remember the noise happening with the AC on, but it's possible, I just don't remember.

Any ideas out there? (I hope!?)
