All I can say that my 94 SE has eaten five cables to get to 145k, and two of these failed leaving me stranded roadside. Often, the failures are unexpected with no precursing sympthoms. This is unacceptable for any use of a car for more than walking distance from home. Why do you think Saab made the change in 1998 and forever forward? Mounting consumer complaints were not worth the few dollars saved by the GM accountants.

I have never had problems with the clutch cylinder or slave on any hydraulic clutch on 4 previous Saab OG 900 turbos 1980 - 1989 models (some I put more than 200k on)or my 00 9-3 SE where I can get out of my 94 and into my 00 S-E and see the improvement in the clutch mechanisim. Why do you think aftermarket kits for hydraulic conversion for the 94-97 NG900 are availiable with many folks on this board buying them? The cable clutch is a POS. Check the archives on broken clutch cables/self adjusters. Probably hundreds documented. All these people cannot be imagining things. Now do a search for hydraulic clutch failures of clutch cylinders or slave for the 1998 model or 9-3 on the 9-3 board...

There is no contest. I would not consider any 94-97 NG900 with a manual transmission reliable transportation. I drive my 94 SE around town and to work only, where help is only a cell call away or I can walk if I have to.

Bottom line is the MY 1998 is a major improvement if only for this one reason
