Hi,

Well, I just became the proud owner of a 94 SET turbo with 230K miles.. got it really cheap and the reason why was a blown rear pulley.. which let go the serpentine.. and the water pump... and you know the rest of the story... the guy I got it from is a friend of mine and just bough a 9-5, so no more time to tinker with the SET.

Tearing into it found that the head gasket was ok, and what had blown was the one of the coolant lines to the throttle body. I've ordered the parts, and there were two bad oil leaks anyway to fix on the head gasket.

In this wonderful process I've found:
bad...
-Broken exhaust stud (Far copilot side by timing chain)
-Lots of oil/crud on the cranshaft pulley side of the engine (Bad crankshaft seal?)
-Lots of oil/crud below the turbo
-Dirty grimy injectors
-Vaccum lines dried/ broken when taken off
-Intercooler tubes dried/cracked
-The intake manifold and combustion chamber covered with carbon residue
-The leaky head gasket was not a saab part, so I am guessing it was replaced already... I'll check the head to make sure it's straight.. the oil leaks where on the front right and left corners.
-Exhaust manifold gasket showed quite a bit of blow-by on about 30% or the lower area

So far I've got $100 into a new head gasket kit, thermostat and pulley from thesaabsite.com, and $500 for the car. I'd like to make it as reliable as possible by doing good preventive maintenance

Questions:
-What's the best source (read, not cheap but good knowledge/fair price) for:

1.the intercooler lines ( no local shops in Duluth, MN had them)
2.radiator hoses (I plan on replacing most of them)/clamps?
3.water pump (HEPU brand ok?)
4.exhaust stud (SAAB?)
5.new injector O-rings (Saab?)
6.vaccum lines
7.Turbocharger gasket
8.Crankshaft seal? (Oil pump seal too?)( I am assuming it's bad too)... if the one on the flywheel is bad, we'll it's going to have to wait)
9.Rubber ends of the DI cassete (where they meet the plugs)
10. Short serpentine belt? (part#??)
11. Manifold plastic cover ( it was missing altogether )
12. Timing chain guide (I busted the end on the right side while removing the head by myself,... I know I should have had help). Should I replace both sides or only the broken one?

What's the best method to remove all the black crud on the inside of the intake manifold?, combustion chamber? should I bother with it?

Should I clean the throttle body at this time?(lots of residue where the water lines went, brown hard stuff)

The shifter feels like a wet noodle, not very stiff/precise, solution?

The nearest SAAB dealer is 240 miles away, so I'll be going mostly on the net.

Thanks in advance

Moises Romero
