Refering to the NG900 engine which I have done a few.

When the balance shaft sprockets are shedding metal, it drops down into the oil pan and is sucked up into the oil pump and passed through the releif valve and then it gets stuck in the oil filter.

So on those engines, all bearings are fine throughout the engine and I have been able to save them by installing a new timing cover, oil pump gear with outer cover, new timing chain and guides and in some cases new balance shaft sprockets, guides, tensioner and chain.

Lately though, I have stopped installing the balance shaft parts to save the customer money since the increase in vibrations are not really noticeable.

But again, I have not seen that particular scenario on the B205/235 engine so I can't say for sure.
If timing chain and balance shaft sprockets look fine without pieces missing, the metal must have come from somewhere else.

These engine seems to wear out the timing chain a lot more than older engines so Saab have extended the allowed wear noted on the tensioner body for these engines, I guess so that they don't have to do as many repairs under warranty.
