The bolts will go through the subframe. The bolt head or nut will need to be inside the subframe member. Access is already limited. So a skid plate would have to provide an opening to the opening that is in the member now. So the plate will have to be designed with this in mind.

Skid plates that have protruding fasterners are not much fun if the fastener gets knocked off. So the fastener should be flush. There is a depression in the member that can be used to provide for a flush fasterner.

Aluminum is not a good idea. To soft and to grabby when you hit something. It would also move too much with heat.

Don't make the changing of the oil filter difficult. Don't limit air flow around the down pipe and cat converter.

Access to the oil fiter and protection of the oil pan are conflicting objectives.

Remember, when the bar or skid plate takes a hit which causes it to bend, it will want to also deform the subframe and will pull it in. This deformation pulls in the lateral control arm bushing. The result is more tow in than you want. So one has to think about which type of damage is preferred if you take a hit.

As for affects on the steering, this is the wrong thing to do if it is the first mod that you make. It is the rubber bits that are limiting. A subframe needs to be stiff, stength is a secondary consideration.
