My girlfriend has a 95' 900S 6-cyl with less than 60,000 mi that blew the timing belt about 4-months ago. The shop (not dealer) repaired the damage to the tune of almost six grand. Three months later driving on the freeway the oil light went on and before she got a chance to get out traffic ,ouch. She took it to the same mechanic to get it checked out. Turns out (so he says) that there was sludge in the pan that clogged the pickup and she lost oil pressure so now the bottom end is toast. His explanation is that at some point the car went a long time with out oil changes and built up the sludge (my girlfriend has had the oil changed every 3,000 mi in the year and half she's owned it and has access to records to see if the previous owner did too so she is checking). When I asked him why he didn't notice any sludge when he rebuilt the top end he said there wasn't that much of it visible. He showed me the pan and there was some crap in it along with some large chuncks which looked more like gasket material that disintegrated to the touch (I can't help but wonder if it came from the car or the shops parts cleaner) . Looking at the bottom end I didn't notice any build up in any visible passages or any major carbon deposits anywhere. Does any of this sound fishy to anyone else, like a shop covering their A#%. I don't know a thing about Saabs so any of your ideas, suggestions, comments would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much in advance.
