Hi I have a 900s with 120+ miles on it. I have some questions for you lot.
1. I have always used regular oil, but hear that if i want to get a lot of miles out of my engine (and I do) that I need to switch to fully synthetic oil (even though saab's own brand is semisynthetic) and put in some fuel cleaner into my gas tank once a year as well. And if i do switch to synth oils from now on do I have to have a one-time thing done along the lines of cleansing every bloody cokey oil blob out of there some how? how? what? but primarily: what brand oils / fluids / weights do i need to be putting in between my 33k visits to my real (ie. expensive) saab dealer. Syntec? or fully synthetic? help!

2. I have had the car for 60k but haven't had the automatic transmission serviced, but now at 120k, i'm starting to feel a little bonk when it shifts, particularly from 1st to 2nd isn't so smooth as it once was. My nightmare is to take it to a transmission place (or even saab cert dealer) and odds are they will just on reflex say, "oh hell yeah, this sucker needs to be rebuilt" to get themselves a nice week's work! Well, i don't THINK there's anything wrong with it, but it's just not so smooth as it was...is there some kind of fluid drain/vacuum/mega clean, re-lube transmission type service i should get to make it feel better than it does? help!

3. My mpg when I got the car was about 26 according to our good friend Sid, but now its down to about 20. What do I need to do to get it back up there? I assume it's not just a quantifiable mpg that dropped but probably performance in general (though I can't quantify that, so it's hard to say if its truly gotten more sluggish or not). I'm told that cleaning the cylenders (though that is like greek to me) may be the cure. maybe other kinds of additives/cleansers one time or in the oil or gas can help, but i haven't the foggiest. help!

I only have one trouble complaint, but it would be off topic for a general maintenance question like this so I'll save that for another post.

I do hope this q & a helps other dimwits like me too chicken to speak out). You guys are awesome, and I appreciate having gurus like you to ask my dumb questions to!

Thanks,
William B. Portland, Oregon.
