The 9-6X exterior will be Saab-ized, as the article suggests, and in my opinion this could potentially be a good vehicle for Saab. Reading through the media's first reactions to the Subaru version (which is depicted in the picture you linked) it seems as though the Tribeca has some really good things going for it -- not including its sense of style ;-). The Edmunds First Look article on the Tribeca is full of praise. It suggests that shoppers in the market for a Toyota Highlander or Honda Pilot would be well served in considering a Tribeca alongside those other SUVs. Well, add a 9-6X to the mix. If the Tribeca's weakness is its styling, then maybe a sleeker, less bulbous Saab version can draw some customers. And why shouldn't it? Subaru has endowed the car with stuff like a touch-screen nav system, mp3-equipped stereo, a host of safety features, and even a hint of sporting intentions.
It's interesting to me how Subaru and Saab both have a history of affiliation with aviation, and the way that they both tend to have loyal customers. Perhaps Saab and Subaru aren't so different after all? But of course the big question is whether they will be able to successfully share their products.
I appreciate that there are longtime Saab fans, like yourself, who might be more apt to drool over a classic Sonnet rather than a shiny new SportCombi. It rather reminds me of my own experiences with things like the Mighty Morphing Power Rangers franchise. While the first iterations of the series were the best, they slowly faded from glory when the producers began making all of these terrible spinoffs. With Saab, you probably feel the same disappointment and resentment that I experienced with Power Rangers, but I wouldn't lose hope just yet. Keep in mind that the purpose of these new products, rebadged or not, is to try to make Saab even bigger and better than it used to be. Together let's hope that bigger and better means throwing those good ol' hatchbacks back into the mix. :-)
