This has always made more sense to me than a reworked Subaru. There is no Astra equivalent in the US. The Cobalt is similar, but only in the same sense the Malibu is a 9-3. I think it is much better to share a platform with a car from Europe, that isn't selling in the US market.
The current Astra is quite a car and since GM did such a bad job endowing the 9-2x the essense of the Saab, they should have stuck with the Astra for a slapped together job. I also believe it will be much easier to put the soul of a Saab into an Astra and make it be a car most of us on this board would buy.
