So I looked into this after my post because of disbelief. Turns out it's true, to an extent. The car will work and be drive-able with out setting up the battery, but allegedly the computer can control the alternator's charging rate based on age of the battery, etc. So, if you *don't* program the ECU it may over/under charge the battery leading to shorter lifespan.
Good news is you won't get stuck somewhere in an emergency. Bad news is the dealer will charge you north of $400 to replace your battery.
