Consumer Reports (which I generally respect) has been saying you don't need to pre-rinse dishes before putting them into a DW for years. And I think that's correct 85% of the time, but not 100% of the time.
Our dishwasher is only a few years old (so "modern" at least by my standards) and in most cases you can toss dishes, silverware, etc. in there without doing anything to them first (other than scraping excess food into the trash).
But if you put something like a pan used for roasting that has hardened-on stuff in the bottom, without manually doing some cleaning first, there's no way that thing's coming out of the DW clean. I've tried many times (I'm a very lazy person ;^) ) and have been disappointed almost every time.
