"It was a historic event when 20 engineers each from GM North America, Opel and Saab gathered at the GM's technical center in Warren, Michigan, six years ago to sketch a midsize chassis, named Epsilon, to be used by all three divisions. GM bought Opel in 1929, yet it never had had a meeting like this to plan a new car. Epsilon could determine the fate of five of General Motors' car divisions"
Amazingly, no real compromises were made on the chassis that affected quality. The chassis catered to all brands and both the US and European marketplace. The only real compromise ended up being weight. Because it catered to all of the manufacturers in some way, the chassier, in the end, was much heavier than originally anticipated. Of course, I don't see this as much of a compromise, because it in the end helps ride quality in the respect that it makes the vehicle feel more solid and expensive.
I'm happy with the platform, and am excited to see a Chevy Malibu that has the quality of ride and feel to give the Japanese a run for their money. It's about time that an American car can compete for Americas best seeling car again.
Cheers,
Brian.
