Re: Easy tyre math Posted by peter [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Here is the easy tyre math for you. Do your own calculations.
The standard size on your SPG was 195/60/15 What this means is the tyre is 195 mm wide with a 60% aspect ratio (60% of the width of the tyre= sidewall
height and a 15" wheel.
You first need to figure the total height of the tyre, but will also have to convert inches, metric and percentage to the same integers.
195 divided by 25.4 (metric conversion to inches) X 60% divided by 100% X
2 Radii plus the wheel size
Ex. Since we will have some common denominators, calculate it like this.
195 X 60 divided by 2540 X 2 + 15 = 24.2" diametre
the 2540 is 25.4 (conversion) X 100%
A 225/50/16 = 24.9" keep in mind that the sidewall is only half of the total difference.
A 205/45/16 = 23.3"
A 205/50/16 = 24.1" PERFECT FIT
A 225/45/16 = 24" perfect height but may be difficult on width, ther may also be a limited choice on tyres available. Keep in mind that if it rubs
you will have problems not only in noise and tyre damage but you can cause mechanical damage as well. Look at the data specs on the manufacturers sheet to see how wide the tyres actually are. Many manufacturers take their measurements at different areas. Michelin have a tendency to be more square.
