Though, quite a bit more difficult to find in a coaxial/triaxial configuration that most Americans will be installing. For components speakers though, it's hard to beat the European makes. Including:

Vifa, Seas, Peerless, Audax, Focal, and Eton. There are a few more, these are what come to mind at the moment. Among these, I feel Peerless has the best price/performance ratio, though for tweeters, the Vifa D26NC is a steal. $20-30 each, why in the world would you pay $60-$100 or more per tweeter for Polk, or Infinity, or Boston Acoustics? For that matter, why buy a whole component system at retail, where the crossover is about four times larger than it needs to be (and uses lower quality components as well)? How the heck do you find a place to mount a crossover the size of a salad plate in your car?

Anyway.. :)

If you want the best sound at a reasonable price, or equivalent sound to the retail speaker lines, at a much lower price, contact Madisound Speaker components. I believe they do crossover design for you for a modest fee, and may even pre build them, if you don't feel like doing your own.

As for woofers, there are some good ones from all over the world, though I'd agree, not a lot from Japan. Except perhaps the NHT 1259 woofer. Actually now that I think of it, the NHT may be from Taiwan..hmm... For mid woofers, I'd recommend the above brands. For subwoofers, the best bang for your buck (ie largest volumetric excursion and resulting lower distortion for a given cone size) is going to be the Adire Audio Shiva. There's a 15" version called the Tempest, but it's ridiculous overkill in any car that isn't used for SPL only competitions. Of course, if you want an aluminum cone and rubber surround with a cast aluminum chrome plated frame and gold plated 5-way binding posts, by all means spend $300 or more per woofer for less linear excursion... :)
