SID3 in 900S
Posted by T (more from T) on Wed, 1 Dec 1999 09:16:16
FYI: Last week, I managed to obtain a SID3 for my 96 900S which is normally only present in new-gen 900SEs (I don't think it was even an option for 900Ss). I was told by several SAAB dealers that swapping the regular SID with SID3 would almost certainly requiring reprogramming with TECH2. The SID3 I obtained from an online auction - ebay. Just for amusement I swapped the two SIDs and surprise - it works without any further adjustment.
The old SID comes out by gently prying on either end of the unit. Then simply move the cable catch, disconnect the cable, and attach it to the new SID, and click it back in place in the dash. Entire process takes around 45 seconds.
About 15 minutes of driving later, the new SID3 had adjusted its calculations for fuel data to my car.
I suppose that European market cars had options for either SID unit (or none) regardless of the model of 900. I know that base new-gen 900s in Europe came with a temperature only display with no two line LCD.
BTW: All the sounds that are generated (i.e. seat belt warning, turn signal clicks, etc.) are generated by a little speaker on the back of the SID. This explains why you can't generate the seat-belt warning tone, and the turn-signal click simultaneously.
Amusement.
