TECHNOLOGY FOR THE FUTUREÑFor l990,the high-performance, 16-valve engine in 9000 Turbo models features Saab's patented Direct Ignition (DI) System to guarantee thorough combustion for optimal engine output, easy starts, enhanced fuel economy, and minimal emissions. Saab DI features compact, individual ignition coils for each spark plug and replaces the distributor and high-tension ignition wires. Separate coils supply their sparkplugs with 40,000 volts at the moment of ignition. The lack of ignition wires carrying more than 12 volts eliminates possible voltage leaks for smooth running and the potential for radio interference is reduced.
