Mike's theory may be true, but it doesn't explain all the other failures we have been experiencing. I never operate the remote out of range and the buttons are hard to push so I doubt they are getting jostled. I have such a high failure rate that I carry around both remotes to avoid having to pry the cap off (my fingernails aren't that strong). This is the single most annoying thing about my 2004 Arc Convertible. I will get new batteries or transponders at some point. It seems likely the problem is in the remote itself, not the reception unit in the car, since if one remote fails, you can use the other, but the one that failed still won't work until it's inserted into the car.
