It is probably the wire that is loose/damaged.
This happened to me back in the age of CD players. When I hooked up the portable CD player via the cassette adapter, I normally had to buy a new one every six months or so. The input plug simply gets worn by use.
Try "jiggling" the plug end around to see if the sounds cuts in on the other side or not. I would not be surprised at all if this was it. And since the line isn't a "pure" input, there will always be sound degradation and the need to compensate via the volume. It may also be the iPod that needs to be turned up, as I believe it only has a headphone out (therefore Equalizer controlled via the iPod), not a pure line out.
