Yes people think I am nuts but only b/c I am but that doesn't necessarily make me wrong. I don't believe steering wheels should lock and computer controlled systems are inane. Few questions. When you say locked do you definately mean physically locked or do you just mean it became heavy and hard to turn b/c of no power boost? When you say had to turn switch to off and back to on did you actually end up physically restarting the car or just switch it to off and to on to unlock without a restart? Is your car a stick or auto?

I have seen others who claim the steering locked on the 9-3 SS including something at NHTSA but it was completely unclear what they meant by this (e.g., physically locked vs. lost power and hard to turn) and in fact most write ups suggested to me a no power steering condition not a physical lock up.

When I was looking I wrote SAAB asking how difficult it would be for the dealer to disable the steering wheel lock. Their initial reply was that the (SCL) Steering Column Lock should under no circumstance be disabled by the dealer and that they could not understand my concern. After writing back and expressing in clear detail my views they wrote back and indicated no problem that the dealer could easily remove the lock since my concerns about malfunction exceed my concern about theft. I haven't bought a 9-3 SS to date so I can't say about issues in actually getting this done.
