My love affair with the Saab started all the way back in 1999 after touring europe in my fathers 1998 9-5. From the enveloping serenity while crusing the autobahn to the sheer panic of loosing traction while making the climb up to an alpine pass through twisty mountain road - the car was exciting to drive; there is something about the understated elegance and clean utilitarian lines. I make yearly visits and the 9-5 still stands, albeit a lil older, in the garage ready to claw down the highway.
Back in the states I am the tired owner of a 97 Outback sport. I am trying my best to ride the subaru into the ground but its just not working, it has 130K on the odo and its time for a new(er) chariot.
My girlfriend and I sat in the A4 - superb build but slow and cramped, I absolutley love the audi and could even live with the slow 0-60/0-30 but its dimensions resembled that of the Jetta and one cramped car was enough.
We sat in the Legacy GT Limited and liked the fact that it was larger than the Impreza but I wasnt too crazy about the "I-think-I-Can" luxury styling (i.e. silver painted plastic)...upon exiting the car I shut the door...that trademark subaru rattle still present...the car is a rocket with blazing 0-60/0-30 times but I think I've outgrown the hood scoop there is only so many rice-rockets one can burn off the light in a under the radar sedan before it gets a lil tired. In addition, we're both 6 and she liked the fact that the Legacy GT had ample passanger leg room (which is often minimized by the wheel wells and tran cutting into the space). I like the fact that I can haul ass at 85mph down the unplowed thruway lane and make nothing of it...but thats about it.
Recently, I dropped by the dealer and sat in a 9-3, I like the width of the cabin and the quality build. I also enjoy having "grown-up" (the outback sport just screamed toy car) amenities such as xenon, moon, onstar, full leather, and creature comforts.
What do you guys think about the following.
1- Front driver and passanger leg/shoulder room versus the competitors...
2- Im a little confused in Saab marketing their FWD cars as "winter friendly" - I imagine they are more able than RWD in the white stuff - that aside its still a FWD sedan, am I right? The Subaru with new rubbers is like a RAIL on dry pavement, Im afraid I'll miss that with the 9-3...
what say you?
Thanks
best,
Tom
