< Is Saab making progress? How many cars did Saab sell in the United States in 2004? In Canada sales were up just over 6% on small numbers: 2003 - 1,596; 200 - 1,698. One of the problems here is the distance between dealerships. People are unlikely to consider a car that they cannot buy in reasonable distance of home. >
Gm posts its US sales by make and model after the end of every month on its web site. I've been following it out of interest to see whether the 9-3SS has been the breakthrough car GM thought it would be. The news is not good. Saab's US sales were up 27% in 03 but they're down about 22% or 23% this year, even including the 9-2 which wasn't avialable in 03. That puts 04 sales a bit behind 02 sales when the old 9-3 was being phased out. Saab's EU sales are up about 8% in 04 but that isn't enough to offset the problem in the US (Saab sold about 35% of its cars there in 03.) The company didn't reach its breakeven of approximately 165000 in 03 and it's falling back instead of gaining ground. It's still losing money for GM which is down $3 billion - $4 billion on Saab.
