Your car is very different from what the rest of us are discussing. It's a bit confusing to have the '03+ on the same board as the -'02 cars.
You have a 6L oil sump with an oil life monitor. We have 4L sumps with a recommendation in the owner's manual to change every 10,000, or every 5,000 for hard use (which is 90% of people).
If you're not keeping your car past the warranty period, getting a free oil change when the computer tells you to is fine. However, if you want to make sure the car lasts, or you want to be nice to the next owner, you can double that frequency.
Here's the easiest way to do it: when the monitor says you have 50% of oil life left, change the oil and filter (using either the Saab synthetic or Mobil1 0W40; those are the only oils that meet the warranty requirements of your car). Don't reset the oil life monitor. When the monitor gets down to zero, bring it in to the dealer for a free change, and let them reset the monitor.
