With any luck, a 9-3 on Mobil 1 will not have timing chain problems, ever. Best way to tell is to go to a dealer, test drive a similar and newer but not new car and compare the sound. Let the engine warm up (drive it), then lift the hood and listen.
quoting from saabsite.com>>>>>>>>>>>>
Timing chain failures on the 900 series are quite common. What generally occurs is that the chain stretches due to the millions of revolutions. As the chain wears the gears take a beating as well. Once the chain cannot stretch any further it actually breaks causing the valves to hit the pistons resulting in costly engine repairs. Generally speaking, worn chains can be identified by listening for chain slap at idle. Replacement of the chain can be done without engine removal if caught early enough.

Also read the part on timing chain issues and oil pickup tube in the 9-3 FAQ section on the same site. Not to make you more paranoid or anything... chuckle
