1. All 9-3SS auto trans are 5 speed auto. Only the 03 9-3 Classic convertible had the 4 speed auto. Both are Jap A-W trans and just about bulletproof. 04 Linear was beginning of decontenting. Linear came without foglights and Onstar. 04 seem to have less problems with electronics then 03. Most bugs have been worked out. I have not seen that many 05s yet, since there is no more 30 day service. We usually don't see the cars till the 15K service.
Newer convertible is an order of magnitude better than the Classic 9-3 IMHO. Very nice ride, almost no cowl shake and handles like on rails.
2. Don't know much about pricing, but you are correct in that they drop value quickly. That being said, used CPO car with low miles is the way to go. Get an 04 with low miles and you will be well protected.
3. See #2. Only dealer can CPO a car that he sells you. Yeah you can get cheaper without CPO, but CPO is worth its weight in gold. No 3rd party warranty even comes close to coverage. I work as a tech at IM of Dulles, so I am biased towards them. My brother bought an O3 Linear from IM of Falls Church. One of his co-workers was so impressed that he bought an 03 buyback car from them as well. In this area, you could check out VOB in Rockville, Fitzgeralds in Frederick.
4.Arc is the way to go. Get the B207R motor and stay away from the 17" tires.
Good luck,
Steve
