They just can't afford to have those huge combustion chambers anymore where you could drop a monkey wrench in and still run the engine with plenty of clearance.
Today's car manufacturers are chasing every bit of efficiancy to squeeze out of its engine and smaller clearance and more valve per cylinder is one way.
