I remember reading quite a while back that the reason why gas is so expensive in European countries is more due to taxes those countries put on the gas than the actual price of the gas itself.

Living in California, I know that the reason why a gallon of gas (currently the cheapest I can find is around $2.33 a gallon in my area, with most places selling it in the $2.40 range) is so expensive here is because of state taxes and the fact that the state air quality management board has pressured lawmakers to ensure that a special lower-polluting grade of gas be sold here. We used to have the additive MTBE, but since it was found to pollute ground water, they switched to Ethanol. I'm guessing Iowa's happy about this!
